First Take on EA Sports NCAA Football 13

First Take on EA Sports NCAA Football 13

If you watch the video above, the dad mentions the name Desmond Howard.  Now, anyone who follows college football regularly like I do, understands the humor in this commercial.  Howard was a phenomenal player for Michigan in the 90's and during that time was responsible for many humiliating moments for their arch-rival Ohio State.  I feel that the term "arch-rival" fails to really describe the hate between these two teams.  The history of these two teams goes all the way back to when the two states of Ohio and Michigan violently fought over the correct border between them.  Let's just say it was bad.  So after this Ohio State dad sees his son putting Desmond Howard on Ohio State, it is easy to understand how really truly heartbroken he is.

Now on to the good stuff!  This game takes the success of the prior year's installment and improves the overall gameplay.  But that is no surprise, this is what EA Sports does every year.  Where the real meat and potatoes is at is in the new features.  I spent numerous hours playing the Dynasty mode where you can lead any team you like towards the ultimate goal of a National Championship.  If you have never played a college football game recently, you need to understand the depth at which these games go into.  You play as the head coach and you manage every aspect of your team.  One of the most important parts of this management is the recruiting of new players.  In fact, if you so choose, you can do only the recruiting part and let the computer simulate all of the games.

I chose to simulate the games in order to get a feel of the new recruiting gameplay.  It is a huge improvement over last year's game.  You can now scout the players on  your recruiting board to a new level and throughout a season, the real stats of a player can become more clear.  Think of it in terms of a real team sending scouts to watch high school players and get their take on how that player actually plays on the field and away from the hype.

Gameplay mechanics are not that much different from last year's game but I still justified the purchase because of the new updated rosters and new feature of recruiting as mentioned above.

I personally enjoy this game and feel I made a good purchase.  If you don't care much for the things I have said above but want to play a college football game.  You can always go for last year's title which should be cheaper now that this one is out.

Happy Gaming!

  1. Hey Drew! I guess it will seem surprising to you that I don't know anything about football. I'm from South America and we only know soccer. I love EA games though, especially FIFA, I've been playing it since '97. I hope I can learn more about football through your blog, I really want to understand it.
