New Uniforms For the Nebraska Cornhuskers

New Uniforms for the Nebraska Cornhuskers

The wait is finally over.  The Nebraska Cornhuskers had been rumored to have new uniforms that would be unveiled for their game against the Wisconsin Badgers.

The unveiling came early and today we have a view of the new uniforms.  I dig the new helmets, they look really nice with the black helmets and red "N".  I wish the rest of the uniform incorporated some more black into it but that is my own opinion.  Take a look at this video and you decide:

Fun Places To Go On Gameday in Lincoln

Fun Places To Go On Gameday in Lincoln

Saturdays in the fall are especially fun in Lincoln when the Nebraska Cornhuskers are playing.  I have yet to find a place downtown that wasn't a fun experience.  If you find yourself in Lincoln and thought far enough ahead to reserve a hotel room (I recommend the Cornhusker Marriot), you will be within walking distance of not only Memorial Stadium, but also to all of the tailgating.  You cannot go to a game without tailgating!!!

If you want to visit some bars you can't go wrong with Barry's or any of the bars located along P Street.  And if you want some amazing food, you should head to Misty's on 11th street after the game.  But get there fast because it is famous for its prime rib and you could be waiting for a long time to get a table.
Also, keep in mind that the Embassy Suites located across from Misty's serves a killer breakfast and an awesome party after the game.

Nebraska Football Gameday Experience

Nebraska Football Gameday Experience

Whether or not you are a fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, I recommend you make it to at least one game in Lincoln.  The atmosphere of seeing 85,000 people in one stadium all dressed in red is amazing.  Certainly this experience is something you cannot get in Kansas.

Nebraska home games have been sold out for the last 47 years!  No other college team in the country can boast that.  Not even close!  Check out this slideshow of amazing pics of home games:

Paterno Statue Removed from PSU Campus

Paterno Statue Removed from PSU Campus

Joe Paterno, the late Penn State Football Coach, will no longer have a visual memorial on the campus of Penn State University.

The statue was built in 2001 in honor of Paterno's phenomenal record as head coach.  It was removed Sunday morning and its destination is unknown at this time.

The decision to take the statue down came after almost a years worth of investigation into the scandal that involved Jerry Sandusky, Paterno's Assistant Coach.  After findings indicated that Paterno knowingly enabled Sandusky to continue his horrible acts of molestation upon boys who visited the school.

Paterno's legacy at PSU has definitely been tainted but it will not be totally forgotten.  His name will stay on the campus library in recognition of all the good things he did for the school as well.

Football Bubble Close to Bursting

Football Bubble Close to Bursting

There have been some shocking events involving football players and coaches this offseason.  My fear is that with the recent transgressions by these individuals, the overall effect on the football culture in the United States could change.  Football has experienced a huge bubble.  Much like the housing market experienced before it finally burst a few years back.

Read the headlines on any sports page of current news happening in football, college or NFL, and there will usually be at least three stories of players or coaches getting in trouble.  Penn State ex-football coach Joe Paterno has been dominating headlines because of the shocking developments in his enabling of child molester Jerry Sandusky.  Dallas Cowboys Wide Receiver, Dez Bryant, assaulted his mother last week.  Tennessee Titans Wide Receiver, Kenny Britt, arrested for DWI on a military base.  Seattle Seahawks Running Back, Marshawn Lynch, DUI.

The list could go on and on.  If you look at human nature and what happens when people obtain power, status, wealth, etc., it's easy to understand what is happening here.  They get to the point where they think they are above the law.  They can do whatever they want.  When that happens you can see that the fall from grace will be especially hard.

Could this lead to a decline in the popularity of football?  I believe that it will and it is the responsibility of these adults to be more responsible.  If not, there will definitely be a football recession.

The Shocking Case of Joe Paterno

The Shocking Case of Joe Paterno

The report released by Louis Freeh, former FBI Director, last Thursday detailed some shocking events involving Jerry Sandusky, former Penn State Football Assistant Coach and recently convicted child molester.  There are shocking events of what Sandusky did and of those that witnessed those said events.

What is more shocking to me however is the fact that the late Joe Paterno (died in January from lung cancer), the face of that entire school, knew of the incidents, as far back as 1998, and still allowed them to happen.  Paterno's one clear motivation for covering up what Sandusky had done was that he wanted to "save face" not only for himself and his legacy but also for the university.

It is unfortunate that these events came to light at the end of the Joe Pa's career (a nickname for Paterno).  But more unfortunate and just sad is the fact that Paterno believed it was more important to protect his legacy and the face of the school than it was to protect young innocent boys from a known predator (Sandusky).  There is actually a documented case in the report where Paterno used his influence to force school officials to not notify the Department of Child Welfare of a know incident involving Sandusky.

Since the incidents came to light, emotions have flown in all directions, many felt sorry for Paterno.  But as new information came to light of his involvement, many people's sadness turned into outrage.

Penn State will more than likely face many legal battles ahead but they are very well warranted.  And there is a current movement to have Paterno's statue removed from the campus.

This is a case where it would have been a lot easier to come clean in the beginning, instead of hiding it and hoping it would just go away.  Joe Paterno could tell you that.

First Take on EA Sports NCAA Football 13

First Take on EA Sports NCAA Football 13

If you watch the video above, the dad mentions the name Desmond Howard.  Now, anyone who follows college football regularly like I do, understands the humor in this commercial.  Howard was a phenomenal player for Michigan in the 90's and during that time was responsible for many humiliating moments for their arch-rival Ohio State.  I feel that the term "arch-rival" fails to really describe the hate between these two teams.  The history of these two teams goes all the way back to when the two states of Ohio and Michigan violently fought over the correct border between them.  Let's just say it was bad.  So after this Ohio State dad sees his son putting Desmond Howard on Ohio State, it is easy to understand how really truly heartbroken he is.

Now on to the good stuff!  This game takes the success of the prior year's installment and improves the overall gameplay.  But that is no surprise, this is what EA Sports does every year.  Where the real meat and potatoes is at is in the new features.  I spent numerous hours playing the Dynasty mode where you can lead any team you like towards the ultimate goal of a National Championship.  If you have never played a college football game recently, you need to understand the depth at which these games go into.  You play as the head coach and you manage every aspect of your team.  One of the most important parts of this management is the recruiting of new players.  In fact, if you so choose, you can do only the recruiting part and let the computer simulate all of the games.

I chose to simulate the games in order to get a feel of the new recruiting gameplay.  It is a huge improvement over last year's game.  You can now scout the players on  your recruiting board to a new level and throughout a season, the real stats of a player can become more clear.  Think of it in terms of a real team sending scouts to watch high school players and get their take on how that player actually plays on the field and away from the hype.

Gameplay mechanics are not that much different from last year's game but I still justified the purchase because of the new updated rosters and new feature of recruiting as mentioned above.

I personally enjoy this game and feel I made a good purchase.  If you don't care much for the things I have said above but want to play a college football game.  You can always go for last year's title which should be cheaper now that this one is out.

Happy Gaming!
